15 Anime Characters Who Are Blind

It's surprisingly uncommon for anime characters to have any sort of disability. This is a shame, since not only do viewers with disabilities want to see themselves represented, but these characters and experiences can open up new storytelling possibilities. This list highlights some of the more interesting blind anime characters. In many cases, these characters possess heightened hearing or other senses that help them navigate their world - and in the case of action series, dominate their opponents. For example, Gyomei Himejima from Demon Slayer is considered the strongest member of the Hashira. He utilizes his enhanced hearing to fight on par with overwhelmingly powerful demons. Meanwhile, Komugi from Hunter x Hunter possesses a different type of strength. She's a master Gungi player who can't be defeated even by Meruem, who has a superhuman intellect. Which blind anime character do you like the most?

    Gyomei Himejima - 'Demon Slayer'

Despite having been in multiple battles against demons as a Hashira, Gyomei wasn't blinded in a fight. Instead, he lost his sight due to a fever he had as a small child. This doesn't stop him from using Stone Breathing with a Nichirin Chained Flail and Axe. Like many blind characters, Gyomei has supernatural hearing that allows him to perceive far more than the average sighted person. However, this trait is interesting in Demon Slayer, because sensory powers are extremely common - for example, Zenitsu, who is not blind, also possesses exceptional hearing.

    Komugi - 'Hunter x Hunter'

For Komugi, the most important thing in the world is Gungi. She's the undefeated champion of Gungi, which is why Meruem asks to see her. He's bored, and he wants to learn everything there is to learn about the world, including games. Other humans who have been brought to Meruem find him terrifying due to his monstrous appearance, but Komugi can't see him, so she doesn't care. Really, though, she probably wouldn't have cared even if she could see him. What matters to her is the connection she builds with him through playing the game that she loves.

    Hyakkimaru - 'Dororo'

Before Hyakkimaru was born, his father traded away his limbs, skin, eyes, ears, and several other organs to a group of demons in exchange for the prosperity of the land. Hyakkimaru somehow survived and gained enough strength to fight the demons and get his body parts back. But until he finds the demon hanging onto his eyes and defeats it, he's completely blind.

Saigiku Jono - 'Bungo Stray Dogs'

Despite having a major sadistic side, Saigiku Jono is probably the chillest member of the Hunting Dogs special unit. He was recruited into the group due to his exceptional hearing, which he developed to compensate for his blindness. He also has an extremely enhanced sense of smell. These abilities allow him to perceive small details about others, such as temperature, pulse, emotional shifts, and more. While this is great for interrogation, he tends to get really irritated by other people's extreme emotions, so it clearly isn't all fun for him.

    Fujitora - 'One Piece'

Fujitora was recruited to work as an Admiral after Kuzan left and Sakazuki was promoted. He's an extremely serious and honorable person, which is the reason why he's blind. He chose to blind himself in order to avoid seeing all the evil in the world. It was only when he fought Luffy that he regretted it, because he wanted to see what this new pirate looked like. Being blind doesn't stop him from being a top level warrior. He uses Haki to sense things as needed, and he's a spectacular swordsman.

Shion Yamada Asaemon - 'Hell's Paradise'

Despite the scars over his eyes, Shion didn't go blind thanks to an injury. He was actually born blind, but his mother, a street performer, slashed his eyes in order to make him seem more sympathetic to onlookers who might give them money. In order to compensate for his blindness, he relies on Tao to understand his environment, a skill he developed at an early age, but didn't fully understand until later. He's also an expert swordsman and one of the strongest members of the Yamada clan.

    Shunsuke Otosaka - 'Charlotte'

Shunsuke Otosaka's Time Leap ability allows him to travel through time when light enters both of his eyes at the same time. Repeatedly using this ability eventually blinded him. He knew that this was a risk, but he thought that it was worth it. His goal is to create a future where his siblings and other kids with powers can be safe, and if he has to sacrifice his sight to do that, so be it.

    Yin - 'Darker than Black'

Yin was once an ordinary teenage girl living with her parents in Finland. Despite not being able to see, she could sense that her mother was developing a romantic relationship with her piano teacher. This situation became even more distressing when her father passed away and she discovered her mother and the piano teacher holding hands. Overwhelmed with emotion, Yin attempted to jump in front of an oncoming truck, and her mother tragically lost her life trying to save her. Nowadays, Yin is a Doll - an emotionless person who uses mediums, like water, to observe a wide area. Although she is still blind, her observation skills are unparalleled.

    Nunnally Lamperouge - 'Code Geass'

Nunnally is Lelouch's little sister, which means that, like him, she's an exiled member of Britannian royalty. Throughout most of the series, she's passive and sweet, but she does show some serious backbone later on. There's nothing physically wrong with Nunnally's eyes, but she's blind throughout most of the series. This is because of a Geass that her father used on her in order to protect her from V.V.

    Kaname Tosen - 'Bleach'

Once the captain of the 9th Division of the Gotei 13, Kaname Tosen betrayed Soul Society alongside Aizen. He did this because he's always resented Soul Society for allowing his best friend's killer to walk free. Blind since birth, he's still able to sense the world around him through a combination of enhanced senses and supernatural means. Ironically, he uses Resurrección to restore his sight at one point, but this makes him a lot worse at interacting with the world. He begins relying way too strongly on his new sight, and as a result, gets hit by attacks he could have easily dodge before he could see.
