Privacy

Reading maxnews needs no account, and we don't track you while you read. We only store something when you comment, like a comment, vote on a ranking or sign up for the newsletter. This page explains what, and why.

Comments

We store the name you enter, your comment and the time you posted it. They are shown publicly under the article. Write only what you are happy for anyone to read.

Votes and likes

We count one vote per visitor on each ranking entry, and one like per visitor on each comment. Without accounts, we recognise a visitor by a browser fingerprint: an identifier calculated in your browser from its settings (screen, time zone, languages and similar), combined with the network part of your IP address.

  • The fingerprint is calculated only when you vote, like or comment, never when you just read a page. It stays in your browser for that session.
  • We never store the fingerprint or your IP address themselves, only salted hashes of them: one-way codes that let us tell “the same visitor” apart without being able to turn them back into the original values.
  • Your browser also remembers your own votes and likes in its local storage, so the buttons show what you chose. Clearing your browser data removes that.

Spam limits

To stop spam and vote stuffing, we limit how many comments, votes, likes and sign-ups come from one address in a given time. These limits use the same salted hash of your IP address.

Newsletter

When you sign up, we store your email address, which newsletter you chose and the time you agreed. We use them only to send that newsletter, and every email has an unsubscribe link. We don't send any emails yet; we will start once the newsletter launches.

Removing a comment or your data

To have a comment removed, or to ask what we hold about you, email [email protected] with the article and the name you used.

Articles from other sites

Articles and their images come from BBC, goal.com and Autocar, and rankings from Ranker; each one links to its source.
