14 Movies Where A Normal Night Spirals Out Of Control

We've all had a night where everything just kind of gets completely out of hand. Alas, few among us can live up to the insanity that happens in Hollywood's various "one crazy night" movies. These aren't your typical night-out kind of flicks... no, we're talking about the films where s**t really does hit the fan in a major way. Films like Game Night, where a series of twists ends up giving a group of friends a harrowing night they'll never forget. Or maybe The World's End, where old high school buddies try to recreate a bar crawl only to discover an alien plan to assimilate humanity into an intergalactic ecosystem. Collateral is another good example, seeing as a normal cab driver ends up killing a hitman in a standoff after agreeing to drive him around for $600. After all, if these films were about your average, everyday kind of night, they wouldn't be memorable in the first place. In Tinseltown, a lot can happen in a short amount of time.

    Game Night

How The Night Begins: The evening kicks off innocently enough, as a group of friends get together for their regular game night. Things are a bit different compared to their usual routine as they head to out-of-towner Brooks's rented house for a role-playing mystery game with actors and everything. Where The Chaos Starts: Two masked men come in and kidnap Brooks, but everyone believes this is just a part of the elaborate game Kyle Chandler's character has set up. Eventually, they all come to realize this isn't a part of the game, and it's off to the races. Wildest Moment: Well, Rachel McAdams's Annie accidentally shoots her husband, Max, played by Jason Bateman, in the arm with a gun she thought was a prop. It's not a prop. What a fun way to find that out! Watching the two of them try to sterilize the wound with a bottle of wine is pretty hilarious, though. How The Night Ends: After an insane evening of wild events and twists, Max and Annie come to Brooks's rescue after he is taken hostage (again) by Michael C. Hall's ominous character known only as "the Bulgarian." The suburban couple manages to stop a private jet from taking off, take out the Bulgarian and his henchman, and save the day!

    The Cabin in the Woods

How The Night Begins: A cadre of college kids heads out to a cabin for a weekend getaway. Just your average, early-20s hijinks kind of plan. Where The Chaos Starts: Unfortunately for our heroes, they are meant to be a sacrifice to appease the "Ancient Ones" and save all of humanity from destruction. A group of lab technicians subtly influences the crew into being used in a yearly ritual based on the classic slasher film archetypes everyone knows: jock, nerd, floozy, idiot, and virgin. Wildest Moment: Near the end of the film, the group's two survivors, Dana and Marty, find a hidden elevator in the cabin and descend into the mysterious facility where a bunch of horrific monsters are being held. The pair end up unleashing all of them on the lab's employees, causing a gruesome slaughter. How The Night Ends: Dana refuses to sacrifice Marty to save humanity, and the Ancient Ones emerge from beneath the Earth's crust to wipe out everyone on the planet. Yay!

    Adventures in Babysitting

How The Night Begins: How else could this movie start if not for some good, old-fashioned babysitting? Elisabeth Shue's Chris agrees to babysit the Anderson kids and, when doing so, receives a phone call from her distressed friend Brenda wanting to be picked up in downtown Chicago. Chris obliges, taking her young charges along for the ride. Where The Chaos Starts: A simple flat tire turns the night from a simple one into one Chris and company will never forget. Wildest Moment: Having a truck driver shoot out the windshield of their station wagon seems like it would be the wildest moment, but it actually happens to be when the kids get pulled onstage to sing at a blues club. Just your typical crew of four white '80s kids singing the blues for a bunch of adults! How The Night Ends: Chris and the kids manage to get home and clean up just in time for the Andersons to arrive back from their night out none the wiser. It is a scene extremely reminiscent of the finale of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which came out a year earlier and rocked the box office.

    Cloverfield

How The Night Begins: Handsome guy Rob has accepted a new job in Japan. His brother decides to throw him a going-away party in celebration. Where The Chaos Starts: Well, uh, a giant monster comes out of nowhere to wreck shop on New York City. That kind of puts a huge damper on the celebratory atmosphere. Wildest Moment: The head of the Statue of Liberty being thrown like a baseball into the streets of New York is pretty bonkers. How The Night Ends: Unfortunately for the group of friends that Cloverfield centers around, each and every one of them ends up dead by the time everything is all said and done. Oh, and the monster survives. So... that sucks!

    Project X

How The Night Begins: Two high schoolers, J.B. and Costa, decide it would be a good idea to throw a wild birthday party for their friend Thomas in order to boost their essentially non-existent popularity. Thomas's parents are out of town, and his family's house is used as the party site. Nothing bad ever happens in this kind of situation. Where The Chaos Starts: As it turns out, Costa advertised the party with a listing on Craigslist and an ad on a radio station in addition to all the flyers they put up at their school. Unsurprisingly, a whole bunch of people show up to live it up like there's no tomorrow. Wildest Moment: Local police show up and end up shooting a drug dealer's flamethrower tank, causing it to blow up. How The Night Ends: The police successfully end the massive party, though Thomas's house is completely destroyed. Thomas's dad decides to use his son's college fund to repair the home. The boys are cheered when they return to school, though... so popularity achieved?

    The World's End

How The Night Begins: The group of childhood friends that make up the main cast of The World's End doesn't set out to have a necessarily normal night, but they undoubtedly get more than they bargained for. The crew sets out to recreate a bar crawl they attempted 23 years earlier. Where The Chaos Starts: The crew's de facto leader, Gary, gets into a scuffle with a teenager and accidentally knocks his head off, exposing the kid as an android with blue blood. Yes, an android. And it turns out the entire small town they are running around in is filled with androids. Wildest Moment: Gary gets into an argument with an alien entity that turns out to be responsible for the androids, as well as most of the rapid, ever-escalating advancements in recent human history. The entity, known only as "the Network," abandons Earth and causes a worldwide technological disaster that wipes out much of humanity's infrastructure. How The Night Ends: The group readjusts to their new realities, and Gary, always wanting to relive his youth, starts hanging with a group of androids that resemble his friends when they were in high school.

    American Graffiti

How The Night Begins: A group of high schoolers try to enjoy their last night of summer vacation before starting their adult lives in earnest. And it's set in 1962, so times were a bit different back then. Where The Chaos Starts: Each member of the group has their own little journey to go on, but much of the night is spurred by Curt, played by Richard Dreyfuss, and his fruitless search for "the Blonde." Wildest Moment: During a street race - you know, what high schoolers do in their free time - Harrison Ford's car rolls over into a ditch and catches fire, eventually blowing up. How The Night Ends: In the early morning, Curt says goodbye to everyone before he boards a plane to head off to college.

    Date Night

How The Night Begins: Steve Carell and Tina Fey play Phil and Claire Foster, two New Jerseyites who want to spice up their weekly date night. They do so by heading to an insanely popular Manhattan restaurant and stealing a reservation from the Tripplehorns, a couple who never arrived for their table. Where The Chaos Starts: Taking the reservation ends up being a huge mistake, as two mob henchmen/crooked police detectives approach Phil and Claire looking for a flash drive with blackmail material the Tripplehorns stole. The moral of the story? Don't steal reservations, people! Wildest Moment: Claire and Phil pretend to be a prostitute and a pimp at one point, so they certainly succeeded in making their date night more adventurous. At least, that's one way to put it. How The Night Ends: The Fosters end up assisting the police, who apprehend all of the crooks involved with the night's wild events, and become local heroes. Oh, and their date night didn't end up being boring, though it turns out "boring" doesn't sound too bad to them anymore.

    Superbad

How The Night Begins: Two geeky high schoolers, Seth and Evan, get invited to a party being thrown by Emma Stone's Jules. And what, would you not wanna go hang out with Emma Stone? She seems really nice! Jonah Hill's Seth promises to get alcohol for the party, which seems like a bold promise considering he's underage... Where The Chaos Starts: Everything goes off the rails in various ways when Seth, Evan, and their buddy Fogell try to get alcohol with Fogell's fake ID that claims he is a 25-year-old man from Hawaii named McLovin. Wildest Moment: Without a doubt, the craziest thing that happens in Superbad is when Bill Hader and Seth Rogen's police officers torch their car with a Molotov cocktail and let Fogell shoot it with Hader's police-issued gun. How The Night Ends: Seth and Evan's wild evening ends with the pair having a cute reconciliation in Evan's basement before falling asleep.

    Go

How The Night Begins: Two soap opera actors approach a supermarket employee, Ronna, in search of drugs on Christmas Eve. Where The Chaos Starts: Ronna - in need of money for rent - is filling in for another co-worker who is a small-time dealer, and she decides to step in for the guy to make some easy money. Of course, this doesn't quite go to plan. Wildest Moment: Ronna gets run over by a car. It really sucks for her, but also... maybe don't try to be a dealer on a whim if you have no experience? How The Night Ends: Everything, somehow, ends up working out for Ronna, as she can afford her rent.
